The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) where Faculty of Agriculture is domiciled, is located in Rivers State within the Niger Delta humid forest ecological and south-south geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The State is characterized by a rich fertile soil, a favourable climate, adequate rainfall, abundant swamp and forest resources, a network of creeks, coastal and other natural bodies of water. The area is, greatly endowed with vast agricultural potentials and resources yet, to be fully exploited. The peculiar terrain, for instance, presents a suitable ecosystem ideal for intensive and sustainable production of fish, livestock as well as food and tree crops. However, full exploitation of these potentials has been hampered by a gross lack of, adequately, trained manpower and technological know-how. In addition, the university is situated in the nerve centre of petrochemical industry where the environment experiences over-bearing pressure on available food resources and source. Hence, food security and sustainable food production were hanging on a fragile balance. To resolve these challenges, the Faculty of Agriculture, UNIPORT was established in August 2005, following the University Senate approval in 2004. The Faculty which started with four Departments has expanded to include more departments. The establishment of Faculty of Agriculture, was part of a grand plan to train competent and skilled personnel to complement and close existing gaps in the agriculture sector, especially in the Niger Delta region. Saddled with this responsibility, our programmes are presently organized in seven Departments: Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management (AEA); Agricultural Extension and Development Studies (AED); Animal Science (ANS); Crop and Soil Science (CSS); Fisheries (FSH); Food Nutrition and Home Science (FNHS) and Forestry and Wild Life Management (FWM).
